You recognize the insurance company. You have the same membership card. Your coverage has worked well so far.
But does it still fit the year ahead?
It is easy to treat Medicare coverage as a decision you have already finished. Yet a plan that met your needs last year deserves another look—especially if your medications, doctors, budget, or health have changed.
An annual review gives you time to understand your choices before you need to use your benefits.
Start With the Mail You Might Be Tempted to Skip
If you have Medicare Advantage or a Medicare prescription drug plan, watch for your Annual Notice of Change. It explains changes taking effect in January. Your Evidence of Coverage provides more detailed information about benefits and costs.

Look Beyond the Monthly Premium
A monthly premium is easy to compare. The cost of using your coverage deserves just as much attention.
When reviewing your options, ask:
- What would I pay to see my regular doctors and specialists?
- What could a hospital stay cost?
- Which deductibles apply?
- What is the Medicare Advantage plan’s annual limit for covered medical out-of-pocket costs?
- Which expenses fall outside that limit?
Medicare Advantage plans limit annual out-of-pocket spending for covered Part A and Part B services. Original Medicare alone has no annual out-of-pocket limit, unless you have supplemental coverage that helps with those costs. A Medicare Advantage medical limit does not cap every expense, such as premiums or Part D prescription spending. Source: Medicare coverage comparison
Think about both an ordinary year and a year when you need more care. Would the coverage feel manageable in either situation?
Check Your Prescriptions Individually
Bring an updated medication list to your review, including dosages and how often you refill them.
Check each medication against the plan’s covered drug list, called a formulary. Review its cost tier and compare costs at your preferred pharmacy. Your pharmacy choice can affect what you pay; some plans offer lower cost sharing at preferred pharmacies. Source: Medicare & You
Ask for an estimate based on your complete medication list. A comparison built around last year’s prescriptions may miss what matters to you today.
Confirm Access to the Care You Value
Your relationship with a doctor may be one of the most important parts of your healthcare.
With Medicare Advantage, provider networks can affect access and cost. Original Medicare generally lets you use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare nationwide. Source: Medicare coverage comparison
Before choosing a plan, confirm your doctors and hospitals with both the plan and the providers. Use the exact plan name when asking.
Also discuss travel, time spent in another state, and any planned procedures. Those details help make the review specific to your life.
Know Which Enrollment Window Applies
Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7. During this period, eligible beneficiaries can change Medicare Advantage or Part D coverage, or switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Changes generally take effect January 1. However, this period does not create a universal right to buy a Medigap policy without medical underwriting. Medigap has separate enrollment protections, and additional rights may depend on your circumstances and state. Check your eligibility before leaving existing coverage. Make Your Next Decision With Confidence
A coverage review may confirm that your current plan remains a good fit. It may also uncover a change worth considering.
Bring your plan documents, medication list, provider names, and questions to a Medicare coverage review. Ask the advisor which insurers and plans they represent so you understand the scope of the comparison.
